Why not swap your ordinary bulb for an energy saving bulb Why not swap your ordinary bulb for an energy saving bulb

As the nights get darker, and the days get colder, we’ve gathered some of the best tips around to help you save some energy and battle the bills this winter.

Neat heat

In occasionally used rooms, turn down thermostatic radiator valves. Turning down the room thermostat by just one degree will save money annually. However, make sure that you keep the temperature regular to avoid pipe bursts (see our page ‘Prevent bursts & leaks’).

A bright idea

Swap your light bulbs for low energy light bulbs. They might be a bit more to buy, but they last up to 15 times longer. They also give you the same light for a quarter of the running cost.

Keep it cosy

Stop your home’s heat escaping with draught-proofing kits and letterbox brushes. Lined curtains also make a big difference (as long as sure they don’t cover your radiators).

Watch your water

Showering uses less hot water but you can still save with a bath if you use a little less hot water. And when you’ve finished with taps (particularly the ones for hot water) always make sure that they are fully turned off.

Getting the kettle on?

De-scale electric kettles regularly as the build up of lime scale means it takes more energy to boil the water. You can also measure out the water before you boil so you only use as mush as you need.

Get a grant

If you’re over 60, have a child under 6, or get certain benefits, you can apply for up to £700 in energy-saving. Even if you’re not eligible for this, you can still claim up to £600 in energy-saving discounts. Call Manchester City Council’s Warm Homes Project on 0161 234 5312 for more information.
