Our TV region (Granada) is switching over to digital. Here, we go over what this means to you, and what you’ll need to do to be sure your home is ready.
There are four ways to go digital. The easiest is through your existing aerial and a set-top digibox – this is Freeview. However, if you have problems with your aerial already, it’s likely that you’ll need to change it. To check the condition of your aerial visit Teletext page 284. You can also go digital by signing up to one of the three big suppliers: BT Vision, Sky or Virgin Media. If you live in a flat, and have a communal aerial, we will replace your aerial if it needs replacing.
Nearly every TV set (even black and white ones) can be converted to work with a digital signal. It’s not the aerial or TV that is digital. However, most new TVs are digital-ready. This just means that the digibox is a part of the TV set and you won’t need to buy a set-top digibox.
We will replace all communal aerials. However, if you live in one of our homes, you may need to replace your aerial - but only if your aerial is too old or failing already. Digital signals can be received by normal TV aerials. If you do need a new aerial for Freeview, you can search for a Registered Digital Installer (RDI) on the rd-lb website. If you’re looking elsewhere, you need to make sure that your installer is accredited with the tick logo or is a member of Confederation of Aerial Industries Limited (CAI Plus) or The Independent Digital Standards Commission (IDSC)
If your digital signal is provided through BT, Virgin or Sky, you can buy a multi-room package. Or you can buy a digibox for each television.
Analogue video and DVD recorders will only be able to record the same digital channel you are watching. You’ll need a twin tuner digital TV recorder to record one digital channel while watching another. These digital-ready products should bear the digital tick logo.
If you’re 75 or over, registered blind, severely disabled or receive certain benefits you can get help from the Switchover Help Scheme This costs £40, although for some, it’s free.
Visit the Digital UK website or call the helpline on 08456 505050 for more information on the switchover.
