Preparing for the cold snap

The Met Office has warned of cold weather and icy conditions over this weekend and into next week. Here are some helpful tips to help you be prepare for bad weather.
Make sure you have tested your heating system before the temperatures dip.
Follow these tips to get the most out of your heating system.
Do
- Ensure main electrical isolator switch is “on”
- Check the gas meter has sufficient credit
- Check the time clock is set correctly
- Set the heating programme to desired positions/times
- Set the room thermostat (normally located in the hall) to the desired temperature (we recommend between 15 & 20*C)
- Contact PG Direct 0300 111 0000 if the pressure gauge drops to zero and the boiler will not ignite
- Report a leaking pipe, valve or radiator to PG Direct on 0300 111 0000 immediately.
Don't
- Attempt to vent the radiators
- Remove a radiator, part of the system or alter the heating system in any way
- You must not turn off the electricity or gas supply to the boiler (Unless in case of an emergency – gas leak, fire etc).
If you still have a problem with your heating, call 0300 111 0000 and we will book a repair appointment.
Winter check list
Heating – make sure you have sufficient credit on your gas meter.
Water – keep a supply of bottled water.
Light – have a torch handy in case of power cuts.
Shovel – keep one to move any snow from the step.
Hot water bottle – to keep you warm on a chilly night.
Water stop tap – know where your stop tap is in case you need to isolate the water.
Insulate outside taps – lag the tap and pipe or cover with an old towel or piece of material and a plastic bag to protect from the frost.
Car – don’t leave your car running to defrost unattended… Remember there are thieves about!
Neighbours – see if you can help, especially the elderly and frail. If you think that someone needs more help please give us a call and their neighbourhood officer will pay them a visit.
