Sub-letting part of your home

You have the legal right to sub-let part of your home, but you must get our agreement in writing first.

Sub-letting means that you have a commercial agreement with someone who pays you rent to have exclusive right to live in part of your home. The person is not usually part of your household or 'one of the family'. They will usually do their own cooking and cleaning. You must continue to live there - you cannot sub-let the whole of the property.

Giving the go-ahead

If you apply to sub-let, we will check the circumstances before giving you the go-ahead. For example we will make sure the home won't be overcrowded, and that the person who wants to rent from you hasn't got a track record of acting anti-socially or causing a problem for neighbours in the past. As long as there are no problems we must say yes to your request.
